A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will hear a series of petitions on the controversial medical entrance exam NEET-UG 2024. These include pleas alleging irregularities and malpractice during the May 5 test and seeking a re-examination. During an earlier hearing on July 8, the Supreme Court said the integrity of NEET-UG 2024 had been compromised.

In a further affidavit filed on Wednesday, the Center stated that, in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directive, the Education Ministry had asked IIT Madras to conduct extensive data analysis of the results of NEET-UG 2024 candidates.

NEET Highlights

– The Center informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday that there was no evidence of widespread cheating or specific groups of candidates unfairly benefited by abnormal scores in NEET-UG 2024.

– According to the Centre’s additional affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, IIT Madras conducted data analysis of the NEET-UG 2024 results. Experts found that the distribution of grades followed a bell-shaped curve typical of large-scale tests, indicating that there are no irregularities.

– The center also stated in its affidavit that the counseling process for undergraduate seats for the academic year 2024-2025 will be initiated in four rounds starting from the third week of July.

– Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA), responsible for conducting NEET-UG, submitted a separate affidavit to the Supreme Court. They analyzed the marks distribution at national, state, city and center level for NEET-UG 2024.

– NEET-UG 2024 was taken by 23.33 lakh students on May 5 at 4,750 centers in 571 cities, including 14 cities abroad.

– Earlier affidavits by the Center and NTA argued against scrapping NEET-UG, stating that it would adversely affect several honest candidates without evidence of widespread breach of confidentiality.

– NEET-UG, conducted by NTA, is the entrance exam for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.
