Grand Haven hires city’s first female security chief

(Grand Haven, MI) – Nichole Hudson has made history by becoming Grand Haven’s first female Chief of Security. She was hired July 1 to succeed retiring director Jeff Hawke and the city held an open house to introduce her last night. Hudson has worked at the Grand Haven Public Safety Department since 2002 when she was hired at age 19 as a parking cadet.

“So I don’t see it as a woman in law enforcement,” Hudson said. “It just means I’m the best candidate at the time. But looking back on it, it’s a pretty good experience to be the first female chief of Grand Haven Public Safety, so maybe we can see more women break those ceilings when we’re moving forward. They just have to work hard and dedicate themselves to breaking through a lot of the boundaries that they have in law enforcement.”

She says she wants the department to become more involved in the community and says they fell away from those efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic.
