DOH reopens Ocean Seafood Chinese Restaurant in Kailua-Kona

HONOLULU — On Friday, the health department issued a red “closed” placard to Ocean Seafood Chinese Restaurant in Kailua-Kona after discovering more than a dozen violations. The restaurant, known for its all-you-can-eat Chinese lunch buffet at King Kamehameha Mall, was forced to close immediately.

But on Monday, the DOH issued a green “open” placard after the restaurant resolved the violations.

Before the follow-up inspection on Monday, the DOH required the Chinese restaurant to correct the following violations:

  • Dispose of all adulterated food products.
  • Organize all refrigerators by cooking temperatures.
  • Clean, disinfect, store and segregate all equipment and utensils properly.
  • Cover, seal and protect all refrigerated food and label all ready-to-eat foods with a use-by date not to exceed seven days from the date of preparation.
  • Keep staff’s personal beverages away from food preparation areas.
  • Train food employees in correct hand washing in the designated hand dish.
  • All ready-to-eat food must be handled with a barrier (eg gloves, deli napkins, utensils).
  • Keep all poisonous and toxic materials away from food and food preparation surfaces.
  • Make sure all food is stored at least six inches off the floor.
  • Increase roach traps in the kitchen.
  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect the facility, including all food contact and other non-food contact surfaces.
  • Remove unnecessary equipment and supplies to prevent docks.
  • Replace the missing light shade over the food preparation area.

The DOH Food Safety Branch conducts routine health inspections of food establishments where food is prepared, manufactured, distributed or sold to protest the health of Hawaii residents and visitors.
