Virgil van Dijk calls on officials to be ‘held accountable’ for their decisions as he launches a tirade against referee Felix Zwayer for showing in Netherlands’ dramatic Euro 2024 defeat to England

Virgil van Dijk has launched a tirade against referee Felix Zwayer after England booked their place in the Euro 2024 final.

The Three Lions progressed to the last two, where they will face Spain on Sunday as they aim to lift their first ever European Championship three years after losing in the Euro 2020 final.

After going after a Xavi Simons header, Harry Kane netted from the penalty spot on the back of a disputed call involving a VAR check and was booed by pundits and fans.

Then, on the brink of full-time, Ollie Watkins scored after coming off the bench to send England into Sunday’s final, but even that goal was not without controversy, with the Netherlands feeling they should have been awarded a corner in the build-up.

After the match, captain Van Dijk criticized Zwayer for his performance, suggesting that his full-time actions told the story of how his performance went.

“I didn’t have time to shake his hand. But it is what it is, the game is over, we lost, some moments were obvious that they should have gone our way, but they didn’t, regardless of the result.

– It is difficult to accept this. It has been a tough year. We had a big dream and we felt we could have achieved it.

“They keep changing some things, small changes that can have a big impact. Maybe it’s good that they can also be held accountable.

‘They didn’t come here and talk to you and explain themselves like we have to when we do something wrong.

‘It could be something. But I shouldn’t talk about others and we have to look at ourselves.

Denzel Dumfries was adjudged to have brought down Kane after the Three Lions skipper had an effort over the bar, with Gary Neville calling ITV knowledge “a disgrace”.

Jamie Carragher also blasted the call on social media, with fans suggesting the referee made the wrong decision, despite it being in England’s favour.
