‘Think I’ll Go to Costco or Target,’ Says Sam’s Club Member After Fury Erupts Over Policy Change – That’s the Last straw

ANGRY shoppers have hit back at Sam’s Club after the wholesaler announced a membership change.

The Arkansas-based chain announced last week that some of the free member perks will change starting Aug. 19.

The change that’s getting the most attention is that Plus members who pay $110 a year for the privilege will no longer get free shipping and free same-day delivery on orders under $50.

Instead, those who do not meet the minimum spend threshold must pay the standard shipping fee of $8.

As some members have recently joined or renewed their membership, many are furious at the loss of the previous free benefit and that there will be no apparent change in cost.

As a result, some are threatening to take their business elsewhere.

“This is BS. I’ll probably just cancel my membership!” X user Barbara McLain said in a post.

“Their prices aren’t that great anyway. I don’t think I’m saving my $100.00 membership every year to get my money back!

“Now there’s shipping. Think I’ll go to COSTCO or Target.”

Like, Sam’s Club offers both Costco and Target memberships but for Target shoppers this isn’t necessary to shop there and doesn’t have as many benefits.

Free to join, Target Circle is a rewards program for shoppers to earn 1% in rewards, access deals and personalized offers, and have a say in how the retailer helps the community.

Meanwhile, Costco’s top membership costs $120 a year, an extra $10 compared to Sam’s Club’s Plus membership.

‘Not enforced at all’ says Sam’s Club fan as fix for little-known membership rule allows friends to shop

For that money, Costco Executive members get access to all stores, additional discounts and benefits, 2% rewards and additional membership cards for the household.

Sam’s Club’s Plus membership offers early shopping hours, pharmacy savings, optical savings, bonus offers, same day delivery, fuel savings, add-on membership and other benefits.

Both membership-only retailers offer cheaper annual subscriptions for $60 and $50, respectively.

McLain’s comments came after another Plus member publicly called out the retailer for giving “vague” answers to member questions about how the change is supposed to benefit them.

A notice from Sam’s Club stated that the retailer is “evolving our benefits and updating our terms and conditions to add more value to your membership.”

A confused member asked how introducing the purchase minimum would increase value for him and the retailer responded by asking him to send a private message.

Another user then jumped on the X thread and asked the same question, urging the retailer to explain publicly rather than in private messages.

What’s changing at Sam’s Club?

The following changes will take effect on August 19.

  • Club members will be able to access free curbside pickup for eligible items if they spend at least $12. If not, the current $4 fee will apply to each order.
  • Plus members only get free same-day shipping if they spend at least $50. The current $8 fee will apply to other orders.
  • Plus members get free shipping if they reach the minimum spending limit of $50. If not, an $8 fee will be added to other orders.

“By adding a minimum to the cart, we increase access to different ways of shopping for our members,” the retailer answered.

“This will make it easier for you to get the products you want, the way and the time you want.”

However, this answer was trashed by the user who said“Your answer is too vague. I want every plus member to read your answer.

“Please explain in detail how you all ‘increase access’ for customers to shop and add a minimum for plus members.

“What changes and what benefits are added?”

No further response was given as even more Plus members pressed on.

“You must think we’re some kind of stupid!! You actually expect members to think it’s for our own good to require us to pay shipping!?” one said.

“Sorry @SamsClub – I’m not buying it – that’s a big change to the membership offering for Plus members. Screw them. I know I wouldn’t have renewed in May if I’d known,” another Added.

Members are also demanding refunds and membership fee reductions as a result of the unforeseen change.

“Our members consistently tell us that convenience is important to them no matter how they choose to shop,” a Sam’s Club spokesperson told The US Sun.

“These latest changes are designed to simplify the same-day delivery and shipping experience and fees, but also provide better access to the items our members buy the most.

“Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with members saying it’s easy to meet the basket minimum.

“We’ve also added several new benefits in response to member feedback – including food delivery, which members tell us is a much-appreciated benefit, and removing the pick-up fees for our walk-in membership.”
